How do you deal with a great calamity?

I first saw him from afar. Outside the Atwater Market. He caught my attention immediately. I had never seen an electric wheel chair zoom so fast on the sidewalk.

Inside the Market, I stopped to talk with the driver of the speed machine.

He had been in a horrific accident riding his Harley Davidson top-of-the-line motorcycle.

His left leg was crushed. The doctors opened it up, rebuilt it artificially, and zipped up the skin to make the leg look normal.

But he would never walk normally again.

There was no self-pity. His passion for speed was transferred to making his

top-of-the-line electric wheel chair zoom along the sidewalks at top speed.

How do “we” deal with a great calamity?
