I was ready for my first client.
he came puffing up the stairs.
Before he had even stepped into my main office,
He was complaining.
“I couldn’t believe it, What happened to Mrs. Bernstein?
The streets are such a mess."
And he reiterated the list
"The broken glass, the abandoned buildings,
Mrs. Bernstein is in the slums!"
And then he stepped into the main office
And stopped dead in his tracks:
Two fat Moroccan rugs on the magnificent dark stained 12-inch pine board floors
Light grey velvet-ish sectional sofas against the 3-foot thick massive stone wall.
Instead of the traditional desk, a magnificent Scandinavian designer table of a slab of thick white glass
Poised treacherously over a massive concrete off-center square base and
Surrounded by burgundy velvet Parson chairs.
And behind the table, on the wall facing the entrance,
Two ceiling-to-floor length hand made batiks!!!
The client’s breath was taken away
He forgot about the broken glass and desolate buildings!
The first "new" clients came from the yacht club where my husband was an accomplished sailor.
Me? I could barely sail.
But it's there I pulled off the feat of not knowing how to sail and creating a madly popular
club-wide sailing training day ....
followed this by an equally staggering display of stunning ignorance
by organizing the First Ladies Regatta on Lake st. Louis...when I still could barely sail!
The guys who showed up in my offices as clients must have figured,
"If that's what she can do when she knows nothing, she'll be very successful as a lawyer!
Count me in!|
(One of the clients came at the prompting of his wife!)
For the first 3 years in the practice, my clients had the most amazing legal advice in the city!
No mystery. I consulted my legal friends - who were the top lawyers in the city!!!!!!!!!!
I didn't realize then, that creating the regattas was the beginning of the rest of my life.....creating
happenings I knew nothing about when I was driven by an idea!
Like writing a brief for a client that made the federal budget and changed a law!
